This is a drawing of the South Georgia College football squad’s “team picture” in 1929, the year the stock market crashed. These were hard times. No doubt the coaches were grateful to have a job. For the players, their hopes were that one of the scouts from the” big schools” would give them a scholarship which meant they would not be in the bread line for another two years or so. Graduation meant finding a job in a country with no jobs to offer. .My father was one of the players. The faces of the players with the torn and mismatched uniforms, bloody legs, and meager shoulder pads send a message of determination to overcome whatever came along. The unpainted wooden bleachers and the round football are quite different from the game today.
