“The Sugar Cane Grinding”
Signed art reproduction••• Edition Size: 16" x 20" $55 (Flat rate shipping charges will be added) In this drawing I recreated an early morning scene from memories of my South Georgia childhood in the 1940’s. The family is busy tending to the chores of gathering the cane from the fields, grinding the stalks to extract the juice, straining and boiling the juice to make syrup .This activity was more than work, it was a traditional social gathering in the rural South that remained the same as it had for a century before that. We all looked forward to this joyful event each winter . From memories, I sketched the cabin and the piney woods in the distance beyond the fields with the mules, the wagons, the grinder and the syrup being cooked in the large vat over a fire. In the foreground I used old photographs to place “Preston:” and his family at work in the early morning preparing for our arrival with all of our family and friends. |
